| URC gets baking for BBC Children in Need |
| The United Reformed Church has joined with the BBC in it's Get Baking campaign, and is urging church members to get their aprons on, their recipes books out, and to bake, sell and eat delicious cakes to raise funds for Children in Need.
The Children in Need Appeal will be held on Friday 19 November and the URC suggests that bake sales could be held on the two weekends either side of that - November 13/14 or 20/21 November - either as a Saturday morning event, or after the main Sunday service. It's six weeks away so plenty of time to perfect your favourite recipe!
For inspiration and information go to www.bbc.co.uk/food and click on 'Get Baking'for recipes and tips. The BBC has also produced some starter Get Baking booklets which are available for download on the Get Baking website:http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/campaigns/get-baking and Community and church groups can also order printed Get Baking booklets by emailing GetBaking_Communities@bbc.co.uk
The BBC has also produced a series of resources - including decorative bunting - to help people set up bake sales and these can be downloaded free from: http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/food/get-baking/get-baking_bunting.pdf

Sarah Lake, project manager for BBC Get Baking, concludes: "We're really pleased the URC is on board with this - it's a fun campaign, the more people get involved the better! Best of all it's a chance for all members of the church family to get together, learn and share new skills, create - and eat - gorgeous cakes - and raise money for great causes.

| Sad news about Revd George Thomas |
George Thomas, known to many who have attended the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church, has died suddenly. He was 79. George had helped in the assembly office for at least the past fifteen years, his sparkle and sprightliness hiding his age.
Ann Barton, who is in charge of assembly arrangements, said: “George was an integral part of the assembly team who went about his work in quiet ways. He was generous, immensely supportive, and wherever there was a task to be done, George was already doing it. I will miss him dreadfully”.
The Revd George Thomas was ordained in 1961, serving churches largely in the Wessex area. His last pastorate was at Thame from 1988-94. He also served as clerk of the Wessex Synod of the United Reformed Church from 1984-99. Peter Pay, current synod clerk, said: "He was a lovely man, always willing to help when there was a need”.
George Thomas collapsed while out near his home at Romsey, Hampshire on Thursday 6 August. His funeral will be held at Romsey URC on Tuesday, 18 August 2009 at 2.45 pm.
