Volunteer role
Wessex Synod is looking for someone to serve as Convener of the Listed Buildings Advisory Committee. This is an important and rewarding role supporting local churches as they care for some of the most distinctive and historic buildings in our region.
The Convener’s role is not to be an expert in architecture, heritage, or building conservation. What matters far more is the ability to chair meetings well, listen carefully, and guide conversations towards constructive outcomes.
You will be someone who can:
- chair meetings with clarity, patience, and good humour
- help mediate between different viewpoints when discussions become complex
- support churches as they balance mission, heritage, and practical realities
- work collegially with committee members, Synod officers, and local church and their professional advisers.
The role also involves occasional site visits to churches across the Synod (typically up to five weekday daytime visits each year). These visits are often one of the most enjoyable parts of the role, offering the chance to see a wide variety of church buildings and to meet the people who care for them.
This is a role for someone who enjoys bringing people together, enabling good decisions, and supporting churches in their stewardship of buildings that serve both congregation and community. If you are interested in exploring the role, wish to suggest someone, or would simply like an informal conversation about what is involved, please the Moderator, Michael Hopkins: moderator@urcwessex.org.uk
