Good News from Collinwood Road

Inspired by attending the Leading Your Church Into Growth Course, the Elders of Collinwood Road URC, Oxford, decided to review their Christmas activities to see if they could be more missional.  We had for many years held a Christmas Social event in the church hall, ‘Carols and Mincepies’.  We have done our best to encourage people we have contact with to come along and join us for an evening of carols and secular Christmas songs.  LYCIG inspired us to think whether we could be more radical: instead of encouraging people to come into the event, could we take the event out to the people.  So, we celebrated Carols in the Pub on the Friday before Christmas.  The pub provided the space, and a gift of mulled wine and mince pies.  The church provided the musicians.  Around 60 people attended.  A third of these were from the church, a third were people we already had contact to but who do not come to church, and a third were people who just seen the poster.  There was no evangelistic hard-sell, but everyone who attended received a song-booklet with details of the church and its ethos, and a list of the Christmas services. The only problem is that if more people come next year, we will need a larger pub!
